Not being from NYC, I'm not familiar with that area so I simply Google addresses. That said, this seems like a long haul for TL-161 and also 85 from Staten Island. What was the reason for these two going into Manhattan? Do they have special capabilities that were needed at this fire? Just curious and thank you in advance.

Apparently there was one dramatic rescue. When one tower ladder went up they noticed a panicked man in a window. FDNY was able to save him with smoke inhalation.

Wow! That fire was intense and this is the aftermath. Basically the top half is gone. Where were the sprinklers?

I'm glad to see that it's under control and not burning up ! Let's hope no one got hurt !

We need to calculate the total cost of this incident as compared to the installation cost when new and retrofit to see the 'savings' of no sprinklers (sarcasm...)

I hope everyone is safe - residents and first responders.

S/C a 95' TL, and got Ladder 85 from Staten Island...how many 95' TLs are there?

Wow still there. That was one stubborn fire.

Is the building save-able?

Went to bed at 11pm, it was PWH at a 3rd. What happened?

โ€œWeโ€™ve been operating at this fire since 8:40 yesterday evening. The fire had eventually escalated to a 5-alarm fire. At the height of the fire, we had about 200 fire and EMS personnel on the scene. The fire originally started on the fourth floor of the building, it spread to the fifth floor and into the roof area. Right now we are operating from the exterior with our tower ladder streams. We have a deep-seated fire in the roof area that is difficult to access. This will be an extended operation. We have a total of eight firefighters injured and one civilian, all non-life-threatening,โ€ says FDNY Chief of Fire Operations Thomas Richardson, from the scene of the 5-alarm fire at 70 Mulberry Street in Manhattan.

Strike out a box!

I always say a silent prayer every time I hear sirens and whenever I see any NYFD, NYPD, EMT, doctors, nurses and all other first responders. People just don’t realize how dangerous your jobs are or “they don’t care” until it’s their house on fire, they have been burglarized or they need urgent medical care. I wish I was a billionaire and I would give all of you a raise. I am Catholic, born and raised in Manhattan and I lost my uncle (civilian) on the 104th floor of the WTC North Tower. The worse are those who survived but the consequences of being at Ground Zero is slowly killing them. I may not agree with this page’s political views but I do agree that this and all future mayors and governors of NY/NYC need to strongly support our First Responders in every aspect possible. I am grateful for your service and thank you!

That's atleast a 10-75! ๐Ÿ˜

Rescue Company 2

Today the FDNY remembers four brave members who made the Supreme Sacrifice as a result of two separate fires, 15 years ago today, a day that has come to be known within the Department as โ€œBlack Sunday.โ€ On January 23, 2005, six Firefighters were battling a 3-alarm fire in a four-story apartment building in the Bronx. While searching the fourth floor of the building for occupants who were believed to be trapped, the fire and extreme heat rapidly intensified, trapping the Firef...ighters and subsequently forcing them to jump from the fourth floor window to the ground below. As a result, they all suffered critical, life-threatening injuries. Lt. Curtis Meyran of Battalion 26 and Lt. John Bellew of Ladder 27 died that day from their injuries; and Lt. Joseph DiBernardo of Rescue 3 endured multiple surgical procedures before his death on November 22, 2011. In a separate incident that day, Firefighter Richard T. Sclafani of Ladder 103 died while fighting a fire in Brooklyn. Firefighter Sclafani and members of Ladder 103 were among the first firefighters to arrive on the scene of a basement fire in a two-story private dwelling, and they immediately began searching both for the location of the fire and any trapped occupants. During these search operations, Firefighter Sclafani became separated from his company. He was found, minutes later, unconscious and in respiratory arrest on the cellar staircase. He succumbed to his injuries that day. ... See MoreSee Less

We are asked why we use the letter K when talking on the radio. Here is the excerpt from Communications Manual Chapter 8:

Comment on Facebook

The reason is that the Department initially communicated via telegraph and bell signals before radios. In fact, the often used signal "6-5-2" transmitted on the bells meant, "Turn on Department radio for a message.” In telegraphy, the Morse code letter “K" (dash-dot-dash) was transmitted to indicate that the person transmitting was done, and the other person could now respond. Like some people saying, "Over" on the radio.

Speaking of FDNY Communications K ! m.youtube.com/watch?v=qnMs_j81rVg

I’d like to believe that FDNY is somehow responsible for people replying “K” to text messages and it’s an homage to some fire department tradition rather than people being lazy.... but, alas, hardly anyone in society has such class

I always thought it was a shortened for of "OK" as in "Ok I'm through and awaiting your reply"....interesting.

I realized this for myself a long time. It’s pretty much the same as saying 10-4 at the end of your transmission.

thank you.. i always wondered why they said k after a transmission

In the US Navy a signalman sending semaphore ends his signal with the letter “K” to signify the end of the transmission.

Did the PD pick it up from the FD? When I worked EMS many years ago I always used it but many did not

The dispatchers in my old county (where I was a ff for 19 years) used K on the radio for a confirmed deceased person.

We still use it in ham radio with morse code (cw)when calling for any station to respond..

There is a whole bunch of guys that need to read this for damn sure. Lots of unnecessary K’s out there!!!!haha

And speaking of Morse Code, is it coincidence that: Beethoven’s 5th Symphony is da da da dum.... The Roman Numeral for 5 is V.... The Morse Code sequence for V is dot dot dot dash?

Some people dont how.to google. K was a very common thing in communications

I thought it was short for "OK" -.-

One time I used K after my wife sent me a long paragraph I almost didn’t make it.

I thought K was for complete but C would confuse people.

The most abused letter in the alphabet.

Someone's studying...lol

Dart Prince. One day these people will understand us

but why the letter k... k

Frank Maguire You learn something new every day

Paul 10-Fo K

And don't call me K

Andrew M Castellano Michael Roberts I shall start using this more on the radio

FDNY Fire Marshals have determined that the morningโ€™s fatal 2-alarm fire in Brooklyn was accidental, and originated in an extension cord.โฃ

FDNY urges New Yorkers to be #FDNYSmart - never overload extension cords, and remember that they are for temporary use. Never plug one extension cord into another, and never use an extension cord with a space heater or large appliance. See more safety information at fdnysmart.orgโฃ

That whole complex is bad news. I hope people closed their doors so it is isolated to one apartment and easier for the Department to knock it down.

Great post

No such thing as safe ice?? Come to Maine.

There is such thing as safe ice but ok

Common sense is a lost thing

Apparently hasn't ever gotten out of NYC....

really there should be some context to this statement.. As a young fellow I skated on ice on New Jersey pond's for weeks and weeks in the winter..

Random, but how do I become a firefighter?
